The results are in, and The University of Memphis student enrollment for Fall 2007 is down. Sliding from 20,562 in fall of 2006 to 20,379 this year, enrollment figures have taken a small dip the past two fall sessions.
But, Shirley Raines, president of The University of Memphis, said in a press release that she was pleased with the amount of entering honor students.
"We've been putting extra emphasis on recruiting high ability students," Raines said.
However, Raines did not address the lower enrollment numbers.
Neighboring schools Middle Tennessee State University and Tennessee Technological University, boast an increasing enrollment rate.
Middle Tennessee State University has 23,246 students enrolled - up from 22,863 in 2006. This year's jump in enrollment at MTSU makes the school's population almost 3,000 students more than The U of M.
The University of Tennessee also has a growing enrollment rate. In 2006, the University of Tennessee had 28,457 students enrolled. This year, UT's numbers jumped to 29,901.
William Akey, assistant vice provost for enrollment services, said The University of Memphis has been upgrading admissions requirements to ensure success.
"Our goal is to provide access to higher education while responsibly enrolling students who are likely to succeed," Akey said in a press release. "We expect the students we admit to graduate, and our current admissions policies are designed to enhance retention."
This fall term marks the lowest enrollment in four years at The University of Memphis.
